Kaiir Elam's Dallas Cowboys Journey: Following His Father's Legacy in the NFL

Kaiir Elam joins the Dallas Cowboys, following in his father Abram Elam's footsteps, aiming to revive his NFL career and make an impact in the secondary.

When Kaiir Elam was traded to the Dallas Cowboys last week, it marked a full-circle moment for the young cornerback. His father, Abram Elam, had played safety for the Cowboys during Kaiir's childhood, and now Kaiir is set to continue the family legacy in Dallas.

A Family Legacy in Dallas

Kaiir’s mother, Shayla Davis, sent him photos from Cowboys games in 2006 and 2011, when Abram was on the team. "It’s kind of just a surreal moment," Kaiir said. "A full-circle moment." Abram Elam joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2006 and returned in 2011 after a stint with the Cleveland Browns. Many in the Cowboys organization, from the front office to the support staff, remember Abram’s time with the team.

Kaiir’s NFL Journey So Far

Kaiir was a first-round pick (No. 23 overall) by the Buffalo Bills in 2022 but struggled to secure a consistent starting role. Despite showing flashes of potential, including two interceptions as a rookie, injuries and limited opportunities hindered his progress. "Ultimately, it’s on me," Bills GM Brandon Beane said. "I made the selection that didn’t work out, and I own that."

A Fresh Start in Dallas

The Cowboys, in need of cornerback depth after Trevon Diggs’ knee surgery and Jourdan Lewis’ departure, traded for Kaiir, giving up a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 seventh-rounder. Kaiir is expected to compete for a starting role opposite DaRon Bland. "I just need the opportunity to show my physicality and be the playmaker I know I am," Kaiir said.

High Hopes for the Future

Kaiir’s college career at the University of Florida showcased his potential, with six interceptions and 20 pass deflections in three seasons. At 6-foot-2 and 196 pounds, he has the size and speed NFL teams covet in cornerbacks. The Cowboys’ coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who coached Abram in Cleveland and Dallas, believes in Kaiir’s abilities.

A Chip on His Shoulder

Kaiir enters this new chapter with determination. "I’m coming in with a chip on my shoulder," he said. "I’m excited to take on whatever comes next." With the support of his family and the Cowboys organization, Kaiir is ready to prove himself and honor his father’s legacy in Dallas.
