Sandy Ryan vs. Mikaela Mayer: The High-Stakes Grudge Rematch in Women's Boxing

Sandy Ryan remains unfazed by Mikaela Mayer's pre-fight antics as they prepare for their highly anticipated rematch in Las Vegas.

As the boxing world eagerly anticipates the rematch between Sandy Ryan and Mikaela Mayer, the tension between the two fighters continues to escalate. Ryan, the English challenger, remains confident that Mayer's notorious trash talk and provocations will not affect her performance in the ring.

Background of the Rivalry

The rivalry between Ryan and Mayer dates back to their first encounter in September 2024 at Madison Square Garden, where Mayer emerged victorious with a majority decision to claim the WBO world welterweight title. However, the fight was marred by a pre-fight incident where someone threw paint on Ryan as she left her hotel. Ryan has since blamed an unnamed member of Mayer's team for the assault, a claim Mayer vehemently denies.

Preparation and Strategy

Ryan has been training rigorously in Las Vegas under the guidance of Mayer's former trainer, Kay Koroma. Additionally, her brother Dave, a former professional boxer, has been by her side to provide support and preparation for the fight at Fontainebleau Las Vegas.

"It wouldn't surprise me if there was more from her, but we are prepared this time," Ryan told ESPN. "I believe she likes to provoke, unsettle opponents. She knows what I can do and fair play all of her pre-fight antics worked last time, but it won't work again."

The Impact of Previous Incidents

Reflecting on the paint attack incident, Ryan believes it had a significant impact on her performance in their first fight. "With that happening three hours before the fight last year, I believe it did have an effect on me and I fought emotionally, I fought with anger, and it had an effect on how I performed," she said. However, she is determined not to let such distractions affect her this time around.

Expectations for the Rematch

This rematch is one of the most anticipated fights in women's boxing this year, given the intense rivalry between the two fighters. Should Ryan emerge victorious, a third fight is likely due to a rematch clause. The fight is set to headline in Las Vegas, further solidifying the growing prominence of women's boxing on a global platform.

"She loves to do it, trash talk, and I'm expecting her to do it, she can't help herself," Ryan said. "If I beat Mayer this time, I will be fighting her for a third time here [U.S.] because there's a rematch clause."

How to Watch

The fight will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+ on Saturday, March 29, at 10 p.m. ET, with the undercard starting at 6:10 p.m. ET. Boxing fans can subscribe to ESPN+ to catch all the exclusive boxing events and weigh-ins.

Stay tuned for what promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of the most formidable fighters in women's boxing.
