History of the NFL Draft

The first NFL draft took place in February 1936 in a Philadelphia hotel. Since then, it has evolved significantly.

Eligibility Rules

Players must be at least three years out of high school and have exhausted college eligibility or received special permission.

Draft Order

Determined by the reverse order of the previous season's finish, with tiebreakers based on strength of schedule.

Compensatory Picks

Awarded to teams losing free agents or for minority hires as coaches or GMs.

Team Picks

The Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers lead with 11 selections each.

Time for Picks

Different time limits for each round, with consequences for missed picks.

Trades

Possible at any point, subject to league approval.

Salaries

Based on a slotting system negotiated in 2011.
