McLaren Dominates Emilia-Romagna GP Practice with Piastri and Norris Leading the Pack

McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris dominated the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix practice sessions, leaving Ferrari fans disheartened.

McLaren's Dominance in Practice Sessions

McLaren showcased their supremacy during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix practice sessions on Friday, with Oscar Piastri leading both sessions and Lando Norris closely following. Piastri, who has won four of the last five races, set an impressive lap time of 1:16.545 in the first session and improved it to 1:15.293 in the second. Norris, trailing his teammate by 16 points in the championship standings, was just 0.032 and 0.025 seconds slower in the respective sessions.

Imola Circuit: A Historic Venue

The Imola circuit, known for its tragic history as the site of Ayrton Senna's fatal crash in 1994, is Ferrari's home race and marks the beginning of the European season. Despite its rich history, the circuit is expected to be dropped from the calendar next year.

Incidents and Performances

The first practice session was red-flagged and did not resume after Brazilian rookie Gabriel Bortoleto crashed with three minutes remaining. Fortunately, Bortoleto emerged unhurt. Carlos Sainz of Williams secured the third spot in the first session, just 0.052 seconds off the pace, followed by Mercedes' George Russell, who was a mere 0.002 seconds slower.

In the second session, Pierre Gasly of Alpine surprised many by securing the third position, albeit 0.276 seconds slower than Piastri. Russell continued to perform well, finishing fourth. Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar spun off at high speed, getting his car stuck in the gravel and causing another red flag.

Notable Performances and Complaints

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, preparing for his first race in Italy as a Ferrari driver, finished fifth and 11th in the sessions, 0.096 and 0.650 seconds off the pace, respectively. Red Bull's Max Verstappen, last year's winner at Imola, ended the day seventh and fifth, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished sixth fastest. Verstappen complained about his car's rear instability during the first practice, stating, "I can't rely on the rear. It feels like I'm drifting everywhere."

Both Ferrari drivers expressed concerns about their brakes, and Leclerc, who was unwell on Thursday, skipped his media duties and finished 12th in the first session after running wide into the gravel. He also mentioned issues with his helmet lifting.

Rookie Performances

Mercedes' 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli, the only Italian on the grid, finished 13th and 18th across the sessions. Argentine rookie Franco Colapinto, making his debut for Alpine, lapped 17th fastest in the first practice but improved to 13th by the end of the afternoon, staying out of trouble.

Looking Ahead

With McLaren's strong performance in the practice sessions, the stage is set for an exciting race weekend at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Fans will be eager to see if Piastri and Norris can maintain their dominance or if Ferrari can turn the tide on their home turf.
