Why the 2025 Colorado Rockies Are a Betting Nightmare and MLB's Worst Team

The 2025 Colorado Rockies are setting records for all the wrong reasons, becoming a nightmare for bettors and sportsbooks alike in what could be MLB's worst season ever.

The 2025 Colorado Rockies are on pace to shatter MLB records, but not the kind any team would want. With a dismal 8-42 record through their first 50 games, the Rockies are flirting with a .160 winning percentage, putting them on track to lose 136 games—a new modern-era low. This catastrophic performance has turned them into a betting nightmare, with sportsbooks struggling to balance the odds.

The Betting Landscape

According to ESPN BET, the Rockies have attracted the fewest moneyline bets of any MLB team this season. Conversely, their opponents are consistently among the top three most-bet teams daily. For example, during their recent series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Phillies were the most-backed team in three of the four games and the second-most backed in the other. The result? Another series sweep for the Rockies.

Sportsbooks' Dilemma

"We need the Rockies on a daily basis," said Eric Biggio, Caesars Sportsbook lead MLB trader. "Especially in standalone games, we have to push the price out significantly to attract any bets on them." Despite handicapping Rockies' opponents in the -300 range, sportsbooks are still struggling to mitigate losses. DraftKings head of sportsbook Johnny Avello described the situation as a "bookmaker's nightmare," noting that even raising the odds doesn't deter bettors from fading the Rockies.

Creative Betting Strategies

Bettors are getting creative with their strategies. Coors Field, known for its hitter-friendly conditions, is now a target for overs on the away team's total runs. "People recognize the Rockies aren't scoring much, so they're betting the Rockies' team total under and the opponent's over," Biggio explained. This trend peaked on May 10 when the San Diego Padres demolished the Rockies 21-0, leading to a surge in bets against Colorado the following day.

Rare Wins and Future Outlook

The Rockies' rare victories, like their 9-3 win against the Padres, provide temporary relief for sportsbooks. However, these wins are far too infrequent to offset the losses. Barring a miraculous turnaround, the Rockies are unlikely to surpass their preseason win total of 59.5, which has since dropped to 39.5. Upcoming matchups against the Miami Marlins and Chicago White Sox offer some hope, but the Rockies' historically poor performance suggests the storm is far from over.

Conclusion

The 2025 Colorado Rockies are not just a disappointment for their fans but a financial headache for sportsbooks. With their record-breaking losing pace and the betting market's relentless fade, the Rockies have cemented their place as one of MLB's most challenging teams to handicap. As Avello put it, "We just have to weather this storm and wait for a time when maybe they get on track a little bit."
