Ángel Cabrera Claims Second Senior Major in a Week at the Senior PGA Championship

Ángel Cabrera secures his second senior major title in a week with a thrilling victory at the Senior PGA Championship.

Ángel Cabrera showcased his resilience and skill by winning the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional Country Club, marking his second senior major victory in just one week. The Argentine golfer shot a 3-under 69 on Sunday to clinch a 1-stroke victory over Padraig Harrington and Thomas Bjørn.

A Dramatic Turn of Events

Cabrera’s victory came after a dramatic turn of events on the back nine. Harrington, who had been in control for much of the final round, faltered with a double-bogey on the 15th hole, opening the door for Cabrera. The Argentine seized the opportunity, birdieing the same hole to take the lead.

Emotional Victory

"I feel very emotional," Cabrera said through an interpreter. "Maybe you cannot see, but I'm very, very emotional inside. Especially after all of the things that I went through." Cabrera’s victory is particularly poignant given his personal struggles, including a 20-month prison sentence in Argentina for assault and harassment charges.

The Final Stretch

After Harrington’s misfortune on the 15th, Cabrera maintained his composure, securing a bogey on the 18th hole to seal the win. Harrington, who had a chance to force a playoff, three-putted on the final hole, leaving Cabrera with a comfortable cushion.

A Week to Remember

Cabrera’s victory at Congressional follows his triumph at the Regions Tradition just six days earlier, where he claimed his first senior major title. This back-to-back success cements Cabrera’s status as one of the top players on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.

Harrington’s Regret

Harrington, who tied for second with Bjørn, lamented his lapse on the 15th hole. "I’ve had a lifelong problem with getting confident and cocky," he admitted. "It was such a simple tee shot, and I just didn’t get into it enough."

The Leaderboard

Cabrera finished the tournament at 8-under 280, with Harrington and Bjørn at 7-under. Retief Goosen, Jason Caron, and Stewart Cink were another stroke back, tying for fourth at 6-under.

A Story of Redemption

Cabrera’s victory is not just a testament to his golfing prowess but also a story of redemption. After his release from prison in August 2023, Cabrera has worked tirelessly to regain his form, and his recent successes are a testament to his determination.

"I thought that I was going to fail," Cabrera said. "I’ve been working very, very hard, and I feel that all the hard work pays off."

What’s Next?

With two senior major titles in a week, Cabrera’s focus now shifts to the rest of the season, where he aims to continue his dominant form. Meanwhile, Harrington and the rest of the field will be looking to bounce back in upcoming tournaments.
