C.J. Stroud's Offseason Transformation: Building a Dual-Threat Quarterback for the Houston Texans

Houston Texans QB C.J. Stroud focuses on body transformation and speed to become a dual-threat quarterback in the NFL offseason.

As C.J. Stroud continues to evolve in his NFL career, his primary focus this offseason has been on transforming his body and enhancing his speed. The Houston Texans' quarterback has been working diligently to improve his physical condition, aiming to become a more dynamic and effective player on the field.

Body Transformation and Speed

Stroud has been committed to losing body fat and increasing his speed and strength. "I've been working really hard on getting my body right -- losing body fat, trying to be faster, stronger," Stroud said. This transformation is crucial as he looks to improve his pocket mobility and overall performance.

Overcoming Challenges

Despite the general soreness in his throwing shoulder that caused him to miss some practices this spring, Stroud believes the extra work was necessary. After a dip in his passing yards and touchdowns in his second year, he is determined to bounce back stronger. In 2024, Stroud was sacked 52 times, the second most in the NFL, and faced pressure on 38.6% of his dropbacks.

Dual-Threat Potential

Stroud's increased speed could make him a more significant dual-threat quarterback. In Week 11 against the Dallas Cowboys, he hit 19.7 mph on a 20-yard scramble, ranking 28th among quarterback scrambles in 2024. He also ranked 16th in scramble rushing yards with 240 yards. Improving his speed and agility will help him evade defenders and extend plays.

New Offensive Coordinator

With a new offensive coordinator, Nick Caley, Stroud is focused on building a strong relationship to enhance the Texans' offensive success. Caley has been impressed with Stroud's preparation and commitment. "Starts in the meeting and the preparation going into it and trying to prepare and learn the details and nuances of everything we are doing," Caley said.

Looking Ahead

Stroud is optimistic about the upcoming season. "I'm very, very grateful [of my progression]," he said. "But now it's ball time, and this offseason will be very important on getting back with my throwing regimen and with my guys in L.A. So, I got those things done, and I'm grateful for it." The Texans are hopeful that Stroud's transformation and dedication will lead them to greater success in the 2025 season.
