Giants' Running Back Room: Tracy Leads as Skattebo Recovers from Injury

An in-depth look at the New York Giants' running back situation as rookie Cam Skattebo recovers from injury and Tyrone Tracy Jr. solidifies his role as the team's top back.

The New York Giants' running back room is shaping up as the 2025 NFL season approaches, with second-year back Tyrone Tracy Jr. emerging as the clear No. 1 option. Meanwhile, rookie Cam Skattebo is sidelined with a hamstring injury, slowing his progress but not diminishing his potential impact.

Skattebo's Injury and Recovery

Skattebo, a fourth-round pick from Arizona State, was making strides in training camp before suffering a leg injury last Friday. He has since been seen jogging and working with trainers, a positive sign for his recovery. General Manager Joe Schoen emphasized the need to protect Skattebo from pushing himself too hard too soon.

"[Skattebo] was doing a good job when he was out there early on," Schoen said. "He's the type of guy you have to protect from himself."

Skattebo had begun earning first-team reps prior to the injury, suggesting the Giants view him as a complementary piece to Tracy. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield and make plays in space could make him a valuable asset on third downs once he returns to full health.

Tracy's Ascendancy

Tracy, who rushed for 839 yards and averaged 4.4 yards per carry as a rookie, has solidified his role as the Giants' lead back. Head coach Brian Daboll praised Tracy's growth from Year 1 to Year 2, highlighting his improved preparation, blitz pickup, and route technique.

"Tracy has made strides from what he played last year as a rookie," Daboll said. "There's usually a big jump from Year 1 to Year 2."

Tracy has also become a favorite target for quarterback Russell Wilson, catching more passes in live drills than any player except Malik Nabers. This dual-threat capability adds to Tracy's value in the Giants' offense.

Depth and Competition

With Skattebo sidelined, Dante Miller has stepped into a larger role. The undrafted rookie has shown explosiveness and elusiveness this summer, making him an intriguing option. Veterans like Devin Singletary round out a versatile running back room.

Outlook for the Season

The Giants are expected to rely heavily on their running backs this season, both in the ground game and as pass-catchers. Tracy is poised for a substantial workload, while Skattebo's eventual return could add another dynamic element to the offense.

"Cam here is nothing but adding to what we got," Tracy said. "We didn't add Cam just to do one thing. We added him because he's a good running back."

As the season approaches, the Giants' running back room appears to be in good hands, with Tracy leading the charge and Skattebo's return on the horizon.
