Phoenix Mercury Secure Superstar Alyssa Thomas in Major Trade

The Phoenix Mercury finalize a game-changing trade to acquire five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas, reshaping their roster ahead of the new season.

PHOENIX — In a groundbreaking move set to shake up the WNBA landscape, the Phoenix Mercury are finalizing a trade to acquire five-time All-Star forward Alyssa Thomas from the Connecticut Sun, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

Alyssa Thomas has been a cornerstone of the Sun franchise, showcasing her talent and determination throughout her career. After leading Connecticut to six consecutive semifinal appearances and back-to-back Finals berths in 2019 and 2022, Thomas leaves as one of the greatest players in the team's history.

Previously an unrestricted free agent, Thomas had been cored by the Sun, meaning her departure required a trade agreement. She also had a say in her landing destination, underscoring her significance to the franchise. The trade cannot be officially announced until February 1 due to its sign-and-trade nature.

Standing 6-foot-2, Thomas is recognized as one of the best defenders and facilitators in the league. Over the past three seasons, she consistently ranks among the top-five in MVP voting, proving her elite status. A key player for the 2024 USA Olympic team, Thomas holds the record for the most triple-doubles in WNBA history, boasting 11 in the regular season and four in the playoffs. Last season, she averaged an impressive 10.6 points, 7.9 assists, and 8.4 rebounds, demonstrating her all-around contributions on the court.

The Mercury are in for a notable transformation next season, as they prepare to integrate Thomas into their roster. The team's future is further under the spotlight as Brittney Griner explores free agency for the first time in her career, and the legendary Diana Taurasi weighs the option of retirement.

Under new head coach Nate Tibbetts, the Mercury faced early playoff elimination, being swept in the first round by the Minnesota Lynx. Meanwhile, the Connecticut Sun is making its own adjustments, recently hiring former Belgium national team coach Rachid Meziane to lead the organization, succeeding Stephanie White, who moved to the Indiana Fever.
