Moyes Aims to Close the Merseyside Gap: Everton's Quest to Rival Liverpool

David Moyes discusses the significant gap between Everton and Liverpool and his strategy to bridge it ahead of the Merseyside derby.

David Moyes has openly acknowledged the substantial gap that currently exists between Everton and their local rivals, Liverpool, as they prepare for the upcoming Mersey derby. At a press conference ahead of the clash at Goodson Park (19:30 GMT), Moyes reflected on the challenges his team faces.

Since the 2012-13 season, Everton has not finished above Liverpool in the Premier League standings. This period coincided with Moyes' era, just before his move to Manchester United. In stark contrast, Liverpool has enjoyed consistent success, not finishing below fifth in the last eight seasons, while Everton has struggled with relegation threats and financial constraints.

"There's a visible gap between the two squads, and it's no secret the difficulties we've faced at this club," Moyes stated. He emphasized the need for strategic planning and long-term development to bring the two clubs closer in competition.

Reflecting on his past successes, Moyes added, "I remember fondly the last two years when we finished above Liverpool in the league twice. It took a lot of preparation and commitment, and we're looking to replicate that success."

However, Moyes is realistic about the current situation. "We've got a few years to go before we're ready to compete at the level Liverpool is at," he admitted, highlighting the ongoing challenges within the club.

With the match also marking the final night game at Goodison Park before Everton's move to a new stadium, the atmosphere is expected to be electric. "Goodison is a fortress, and the support here is tremendous," Moyes noted, optimistic about the home advantage.

As Everton and Liverpool gear up for this historic match, all eyes will be on Moyes and his team to see if they can start turning the tide in this one-sided rivalry.
