UEFA Imposes Ban on Referee David Coote Following Euro 2024 Controversy

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been banned by UEFA due to misconduct during Euro 2024, impacting his career and football's reputation.

David Coote's UEFA Ban Over Euro 2024 Misconduct

Former Premier League referee David Coote has been officially banned by UEFA following a series of controversies surrounding his conduct during Euro 2024. The ban, which extends until June 30, 2026, prevents Coote from officiating in any European football competitions.

The Backstory

Coote was initially suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in November 2024 after a video surfaced showing him making derogatory comments about Liverpool FC and their former manager, Jurgen Klopp. The PGMOL later terminated his contract in December 2024 after concluding their investigation.

The Euro 2024 Scandal

UEFA’s decision came after The Sun published photographs allegedly showing Coote sniffing a white powder through a rolled-up US bank note during the tournament in Germany. UEFA stated that Coote had "violated the basic rules of decent conduct" and brought the sport, as well as UEFA itself, into disrepute.

Coote's Response

In a recent interview, Coote publicly revealed that he is gay and apologized for his actions, stating that he regrets the impact his behavior has had on the football community.

Ongoing Investigations

The Football Association (FA) has also opened a new investigation into allegations that Coote discussed issuing a yellow card before a Championship match between Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in 2019. Coote has consistently denied these claims.

Implications for Football

This incident has sparked debates about referee accountability and the pressures faced by officials in the modern game. It also highlights the need for stricter ethical standards in football to maintain its integrity.
