Paul Hughes Returns to Belfast: A Dream Come True in MMA

Paul Hughes shares his excitement about returning to Belfast for an MMA fight, reflecting on his journey and upcoming challenge against Bruno Miranda.

Paul Hughes is set to make a triumphant return to Belfast for an MMA fight on 10 May, a moment he describes as a "dream" come true. This event marks his first appearance in the city since 2019, and he will face the formidable Bruno Miranda at the SSE Arena, the same venue where he made his professional debut in February 2017.

A Homecoming with a Purpose

Hughes' career has seen a significant rise, especially after his recent bouts in the Middle East, including a narrow and controversial loss to Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov in Dubai earlier this year. Reflecting on his journey, Hughes expressed his desire to fight in Belfast annually but acknowledged the uncertainty of future opportunities.

"My plan is to bring that back here every single year, but my stock may keep going up, and if it continues on this trajectory, I might be doing huge shows in the US soon," Hughes told BBC Sport NI. "So, I'm going to take this one when I can, and I just pray that I can do it many times in my career."

The Belfast Atmosphere

Hughes emphasized the unique energy that Belfast brings to his fights, noting that fans can expect an unforgettable experience.

"The fights have been abroad in the Middle East, but now it's home, and you've got an opportunity to see me personally fight but also to experience the atmosphere because we bring a different energy. You've seen that everywhere we've gone in the world."

Facing Bruno Miranda

Hughes' opponent, Bruno Miranda, is no stranger to high-stakes battles, boasting a career record that includes a victory over former lightweight champion Patricky Pitbull. Hughes has nothing but respect for Miranda's skills and recognizes the challenge ahead.

"Bruno Miranda is a bad dude. He really is a dangerous fighter. I absolutely have to take this guy very seriously. This is another world title fight in my mind. This is someone who is at that level, who could knock me clean out if I'm not on my game, so I really have to be switched on for the next eight weeks."

Reflection and Growth

Returning to Belfast offers Hughes a chance to reflect on his career's progression. He recalled his professional debut at the SSE Arena just before his 20th birthday and the trials he has faced since.

"I was just before my 20th birthday when I made my pro debut here. You're a young kid. You haven't seen much in life, but right now, I'm tried and tested. I've had everything thrown my way to see if I really wanted this…if I wanted this to be my life. I've passed the tests and here we are."

As the Professional Fighters League (PFL) Europe tournament kicks off in Belfast, Hughes is determined to make this homecoming a memorable one for both himself and his fans.
