Afghanistan-born professional footballer Nadia Nadim is preparing to make a powerful statement at Soccer Aid 2024, the annual charity match raising funds for UNICEF. The 37-year-old AC Milan forward sees this high-profile event as a platform to spotlight the struggles women face accessing sports globally.

From Refugee to Football Star

"Being at Soccer Aid represents what's possible," Nadim told BBC Sport. "I want to inspire women who don't have access or a voice, especially in countries like Afghanistan where the Taliban banned women from sports."

Nadim joined AC Milan at the start of the 2024-25 season, bringing her experience to one of Italy's developing women's teams:

"Serie A Femminile is different - they're finding their way," said Nadim. "I love the challenge of helping build something. Milan's maternity policy shows progress - automatic 12-month contract extensions for pregnant players."

Having played in the FA Women's Super League with Manchester City, Nadim praises England's rapid development:
