Mimi Rhodes' Stunning Maiden LET Victory: From Cut Line to Champion in Australia

23-year-old English golfer Mimi Rhodes reflects on her breakout LET win at the Women's NSW Open, overcoming a previous missed cut to claim victory with a record-setting performance.

Golf's newest rising star Mimi Rhodes has scripted a fairytale beginning to her professional career, clinching her maiden Ladies European Tour (LET) title at just her fourth tournament appearance. The 23-year-old Englishwoman stunned the field at the Women's NSW Open in Australia with a performance that blended youthful exuberance with veteran composure.

Record-Setting Performance Down Under

The Somerset native etched her name in tournament history books during the second round, firing a scintillating course-record 9-under 62 that featured nine birdies and nine pars. This masterclass propelled her into a share of the lead at the midway point of the championship.

"That day was some of the best golf I've ever played in my life," Rhodes told BBC Radio Somerset. "Every putt just kept rolling in. It all feels like a bit of a dream and a bit of a blur."

Nerve Under Pressure

Heading into the final round at Wollongong Golf Club with a one-stroke advantage, Rhodes displayed the temperament of a seasoned champion. She carded a bogey-free 2-under 69 to finish the tournament at 17-under par, securing a two-shot victory over Australia's Kirsten Rudgeley and Italy's Alessandra Fanali.

Remarkably, this breakthrough came just one week after Rhodes had missed the cut at the Australian Women's Classic. "It's kind of weird how that happens in golf," she reflected. "Going from a missed cut and then suddenly a nine under."

Family Support System

The victory holds special significance for the Rhodes family. Mimi and her younger sister Patience were introduced to golf by their grandmother Susan at Burnham and Barrow Golf Club in Somerset. "There are quite a few people who come up to me and remember me through my grandparents," Rhodes shared. "It's really lovely that they are supporting me and watching me from there."

With her win, Rhodes has earned entry into several prestigious tournaments, including The Open at Royal Porthcawl. "I'm for sure going to have a lot of family coming to support," she said of the Welsh event. "It's going to be really special."

Looking Ahead

While enjoying her breakthrough moment, Rhodes already has bigger goals in sight, including next year's Solheim Cup. "I obviously do think about it because it's one of my goals as well as all of the majors," she admitted. The possibility of eventually competing alongside her sister Patience adds extra motivation: "Hopefully when Patience comes into the pro ranks, we can do it together."

Rhodes' victory serves as testament to golf's unpredictable nature and the emergence of exciting new talent on the Ladies European Tour. Her ability to bounce back from disappointment and seize opportunity suggests this may be just the beginning of a promising career.
