Adam Wharton's Rise: From Injury Struggles to England's Euro 2024 Squad

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton shares his journey from injury recovery to England selection, reflecting on Palace's resurgence under Glasner.

Crystal Palace's Midfield Maestro: Adam Wharton's Impact

Crystal Palace's remarkable turnaround this season has been nothing short of spectacular. From a shaky start to becoming one of the Premier League's most in-form teams, the Eagles have lost just two of their last 16 matches. A key figure in this resurgence is 21-year-old midfielder Adam Wharton, whose composure and vision have been instrumental.

Overcoming Early-Season Struggles

Palace's slow start was attributed to multiple factors: key players missing due to international commitments, late transfer window activity, and the departure of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich. However, another critical factor was Wharton's groin injury, which required surgery and sidelined him for two months.

"I'm still not where I want to be fitness-wise. I haven't played a full 90 minutes since I've been back," Wharton admitted in an exclusive interview with BBC Sport. "But I’m improving every game, feeling freer in my movement."

The Turnaround: Belief and Togetherness

Despite the rocky start, Wharton never doubted Palace's potential. "We knew if we kept working, the results would come," he said. "The confidence grew, and now we believe we can beat anyone."

His return has been transformative. From dazzling pirouettes against Fulham to threading precise forward passes, Wharton's performances have earned him social media acclaim—something his friends love to remind him of.

"You can’t get carried away with highlights," he cautioned. "Football is about the full 90 minutes, not just the good bits."

England Call-Up and Tuchel’s Attention

Wharton's rise didn’t go unnoticed by England manager Gareth Southgate, who called him up for Euro 2024, praising his "forward-thinking, progressive style."

"I won’t dribble past five players and score," Wharton humbly stated. "But if I can play the pass that unlocks a defense, that’s my game."

During the international break, he trained with Thomas Tuchel’s senior squad, further cementing his growing reputation.

"It’s about taking every chance to learn," he said. "Now, my focus is on helping Palace finish strong."

What’s Next for Wharton and Palace?

With FA Cup semi-finals looming and a top-half Premier League finish within reach, Wharton’s story is still unfolding. His journey from injury setbacks to England recognition is a testament to resilience—and a sign of even brighter things ahead.
