Kyle Walker Clarifies 'Nobody Here is Messi' Remark: A Tactical Insight into Team Play
Kyle Walker explains his tactical 'Nobody Here is Messi' comment, emphasizing teamwork over individual brilliance in football.

AC Milan's Kyle Walker recently addressed his much-discussed 'Nobody Here is Messi' comment during a Serie A match against Napoli. The statement, made to Joao Felix, sparked widespread debate about the role of individual talent versus team strategy in football.
Walker, on loan from Manchester City, elaborated on his remarks during an episode of The Kyle Walker Podcast. He clarified that his intention was not to undermine Felix's abilities but to stress the importance of a cohesive team process. "It wasn't me saying to Joao 'you're not Messi, pass the ball'. It was saying 'let's make sure we have a process'," Walker explained.
The England right-back highlighted that only a select few players globally possess the capability to single-handedly alter the course of a game. He mentioned Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Mo Salah, and Ousmane Dembele as examples of such exceptional talents. "Apart from that, you say it's a team game," Walker added.
Walker also praised AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, describing him as a player who can take on multiple defenders and score spectacular goals. However, he emphasized that against top-tier teams like Napoli, a structured approach involving precise passing and tactical wear-down is crucial. "If you have a player like Messi, he can take on four players and put it in the back of the net. It makes the game so much easier. But against good-level opposition like Napoli, I feel you need a process of passing the ball and wearing them down," Walker stated.
This tactical insight from Walker sheds light on the ongoing debate between individual brilliance and team cohesion in modern football. His comments underscore the necessity of a balanced approach to achieve success in highly competitive leagues like Serie A.
