Mitch Rees Honors Late Brother with Number 92 at North West 200 and Isle of Man TT

Mitch Rees pays tribute to his late brother Damon by racing with the number 92 plate at the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT, marking a special debut in Northern Ireland.

Mitch Rees, the three-time New Zealand Superbike champion, is set to make his debut at the North West 200 international road race with a deeply personal tribute to his late brother, Damon. Rees will race with the number 92 plate, a number previously used by Damon, who tragically passed away in 2023 at the age of 28.

A Special Tribute

Rees expressed how meaningful it is to carry his brother's number. "I didn't really have a road race number so to be able to take on his number is really special for me," he shared in an interview with BBC Sport NI. The number 92 holds significant sentimental value, and Rees will also use the number 29 at the Isle of Man TT, which is 92 reversed.

Road Racing Journey

Rees' road racing career began as a mechanic for his brother. "I actually wouldn't be road racing if it wasn't for him," he admitted. Starting with a round of the New Zealand Championship, Rees has now progressed to competing on the international stage, including the North West 200 and the Isle of Man TT.

Overcoming Challenges

The sudden loss of his brother was a profound shock. "The hardest part about it is you kind of expect it with racing as you know there's a risk with racing but when someone goes to hospital and they're sick you automatically assume they're going to come out of there, especially when they are young and fit and healthy," Rees reflected.

Racing in Northern Ireland

Rees is excited about his first experience at the North West 200. "The track looks absolutely mega. It's a lot different to any other racing that there is. I can see things that excite me and I'm looking forward to having a ride," he said. He has been preparing with the help of experienced racer Davey Todd and is looking forward to the challenge.

Following in Footsteps

Rees is following in the footsteps of other successful Kiwi riders who have competed at the North West 200, including Bruce Anstey, Robert Holden, and Stu Avant. "It's kind of special to follow in those guys' footsteps," he noted.

Team Support

Rees is racing with the Milenco by Padgett's team, known for their success in road racing. "You couldn't ask for a better team as a newcomer," Rees said, praising team boss Clive Padgett for his support and guidance.

Looking Ahead

Rees is focused on learning and enjoying the experience. "The first focus is learning here [the North West], just take my time and have some fun. I wouldn't be here if I wasn't intending to have some fun," he concluded.
