Sophie Ingle Bids Farewell to Chelsea: A Legacy of Triumph and Leadership

Wales midfielder Sophie Ingle announces her departure from Chelsea after a stellar career, marked by 11 trophies and 214 appearances.

Wales international and five-time Women's Super League (WSL) champion Sophie Ingle has confirmed her departure from Chelsea at the end of her contract this summer. The 33-year-old midfielder, who has been a cornerstone of Chelsea's success, leaves behind a legacy of excellence and leadership.

A Storied Career at Chelsea

Ingle first joined Chelsea in 2012, spending two seasons with the club before moving to Bristol Academy and Liverpool. She returned to Chelsea in 2018, and during her second stint, she became one of the most decorated players in the club's history. Over seven years, Ingle won five WSL titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups, and the Community Shield. She also played a pivotal role in Chelsea's journey to the 2021 Champions League final, where they narrowly lost to Barcelona.

Injury and Recovery

Unfortunately, Ingle's final season with Chelsea was marred by an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained during a pre-season match against Feyenoord in September 2024. This injury sidelined her for the entire season, but she remains determined to return to full fitness and explore new playing opportunities.

A Heartfelt Farewell

Reflecting on her time at Chelsea, Ingle said, "Chelsea is a special club, and since I returned seven years ago, I have felt the support of everyone, both on and off the pitch. I'm very proud to have lifted 11 trophies here and am grateful to have done that alongside teammates who are like family to me."

Tributes from the Club

Paul Green, Chelsea's Head of Women's Football, paid tribute to Ingle's contributions: "Sophie has been an important part of the success we have had over the last seven years. She's been instrumental in driving standards on and off the pitch and has been a leader in the dressing room. She will be missed, but we appreciate her desire to explore further playing opportunities once she returns to full fitness."

Looking Ahead

As Sophie Ingle prepares to embark on the next chapter of her career, her legacy at Chelsea will undoubtedly inspire future generations of players. Her leadership, dedication, and passion for the game have left an indelible mark on the club and the sport as a whole.
