Pochettino's Firm Stance: USA Players Must Follow the Plan
Mauricio Pochettino emphasizes the importance of team strategy over individual preferences in USA Football.

United States men's coach Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear that players cannot dictate the team's strategy. This statement comes amidst discussions about player availability, particularly concerning AC Milan forward Christian Pulisic. Pulisic had expressed a desire to play in two friendlies before the Gold Cup but sought rest during the tournament itself. Pochettino, however, decided to exclude the 26-year-old from the friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland.
Pulisic, who has played 114 games for club and country since his move from Chelsea to Milan in July 2023, faced criticism from former US internationals Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas. Despite this, Pulisic expressed understanding of Pochettino's decision, stating that those questioning his commitment to the national team were 'way out of line'.
Pochettino reinforced his position, stating, 'Players need to listen and to stick with our plan. They cannot dictate the plan.' He emphasized that the decision to exclude Pulisic from the friendlies was made with the team's best interests in mind.
The USA team has faced challenges recently, losing 2-1 to Turkey and 4-0 to Switzerland, marking four consecutive defeats before their Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago in San Jose on Sunday. This period has tested the team's resilience and strategy under Pochettino's leadership.
