Gethin Jones to Lead Team Wales at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Television presenter Gethin Jones appointed as Team Wales' chef de mission for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, bringing his sports and media expertise to inspire athletes.

Television presenter Gethin Jones has been appointed as the chef de mission for Team Wales at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Jones, who began his career at Welsh broadcaster S4C and currently presents BBC One's Morning Live and The One Show, brings a wealth of experience in both sports and media to the role.

Jones previously served as the Team Wales attache at the Gold Coast 2018 Games, an experience that inspired him to pursue a master's degree in sports directorship. Commonwealth Games Wales (CGW) has described Jones as the "figurehead" of Team Wales, tasked with leading and motivating athletes and support staff, representing Wales at official functions, and acting as the team's spokesperson.

"His background in sports and media, combined with his deep connection to Welsh culture, makes him an ideal leader to inspire and guide Team Wales through the upcoming Games," CGW stated. Jones, 47, expressed his honor at the appointment, stating, "Since my involvement in 2018, I knew I wanted to be involved with Team Wales again and I knew I needed to develop my skills and knowledge of leadership and governance, and build a deeper understanding of performance at an elite level."

CGW chair Gareth Davies emphasized the importance of the chef de mission role in shaping the team's culture and values, both internally and externally. "We are really pleased that Gethin wanted to apply for this position and it's a testament to his commitment and passion for the role how professional and knowledgeable he is," Davies said.

Jones' responsibilities will include fostering a positive team culture, building relationships with athletes and the Glasgow 2026 organizing committee, and ensuring effective communication among all stakeholders. His experience at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, as well as other international sporting events, has provided him with a broad understanding of elite sport environments and the demands of high-level sports management.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
