The Intricate Process Behind Premier League Fixture Scheduling

Discover the detailed process and rules behind Premier League fixture scheduling, managed by Atos, ensuring a balanced and fair football season.

The Premier League fixture scheduling is a complex and meticulous process that takes up to six months to complete. Managed by the multinational IT company Atos, headquartered just outside of Paris, the process involves inputting a vast array of information into a sophisticated system. This includes international dates, European matchweeks, and the schedules of lower leagues to generate a functional fixture list.

Key Considerations in Fixture Scheduling

Several factors are taken into account to ensure the smooth execution of the season:

  • Policing Capacity and Geographical Proximity: For instance, Liverpool and Everton cannot play at home on the same weekend to avoid overburdening police resources and transport infrastructure. Similar rules apply to other city rivals like Manchester United and Manchester City, though they are more relaxed in London due to the high number of top-flight clubs.

  • Stadium Clashes: Clubs can request changes if there is a potential stadium clash. For example, Manchester United are likely to request an away fixture on the weekend of October 11, 2025, when Old Trafford hosts the Super League Grand Final.

The Fixture Generation Process

Once all background information is inputted, clubs are placed in a pairing grid to define their home and away matches. The system then generates a randomized set of fixtures, which are manually verified by Atos staff and representatives from the Premier League and Football League. If any issues are identified, the process is repeated until a satisfactory fixture list is produced.

Home and Away Rules

There are three key rules that the fixture generator must follow:

  1. In any period of five matches, a club must play either three times at home and twice away, or vice versa.
  2. A club cannot start or end the season with two home or two away matches.
  3. A club cannot play at home twice or away twice for fixtures around Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Fixture Announcement Dates for Other Leagues

Other British leagues will announce their fixture lists on the following dates:

  • Scottish Premiership: 09:00 BST on Friday, June 20, 2025
  • National League: Wednesday, July 9, 2025
  • Welsh Premier Division: 10:00 BST on Thursday, July 10, 2025
  • EFL: 12:00 BST on Thursday, June 26, 2025
  • Women's Super League: July 2025
