Chris Eubank Jr Faces BBBofC Inquiry Over Sauna Use in Weight Cutting Controversy

Chris Eubank Jr is set to appear before the BBBofC to address allegations of sauna use for weight cutting before his fight with Conor Benn.

Chris Eubank Jr will be appearing before the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) in July to address questions regarding his use of a sauna during his weight cutting process before his highly anticipated fight with Conor Benn. The BBBofC has declined to speculate on the potential consequences Eubank may face if found in violation of their regulations.

Eubank, aged 35, secured a points victory over Benn in their April grudge match, a fight that was largely overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the weight discrepancy and rehydration clause. Eubank failed to meet the required weight and was subsequently fined £375,000, though he did stay within the 10lb rehydration limit on the morning of the fight.

Robert Smith, the General Secretary of the BBBofC, stated that the board has been informed of the possibility that Eubank utilized a sauna for his weight reduction. "We need to establish exactly what the situation is. I want to find out the dates when it was all done," Smith explained to BBC Sport. "He's been called in by the Southern Arena Council. He will come in at the beginning of July and tell them what the truth is and then they'll make a decision."

The use of saunas is strictly prohibited by the BBBofC, as evidenced by the recent incident where Eliot Chavez, the opponent of Adam Azim, was withdrawn from a fight last Saturday after using a sauna to make weight.

Eubank shared several videos documenting his arduous weight cut to middleweight (11st 6lb). "Let's just see what the man has to say. There will be doctors there etc and the council will consider it and decide what action they need to take," Smith added.

Amidst the BBBofC facing scrutiny over their handling of the fight and Eubank claiming that his weight cut was intentionally disrupted, Smith suggested that Eubank performed as if he had no issues. "He was as strong in the last round as he was in the first round," Smith noted. "The medical documentation we [received] since the contest says he was fine."

Following his bout with Benn, Eubank spent two days in the hospital. Prior to the fight, Eubank accumulated £475,000 in penalties, including a £100,000 fine for slapping Benn with an egg. The weight fine was directly awarded to Benn, as per their fight contract.

This fight occurred 35 years after their fathers, Chris Eubank Snr and Nigel Benn, faced off in the 1990s. BBC Sport has reached out to Chris Eubank Jr for additional comments.
