Wimbledon to Unveil Andy Murray Statue by 2027: Honoring a Tennis Legend
Wimbledon plans to honor Andy Murray with a statue by 2027, celebrating his historic contributions to tennis and British sports.

The All England Club has announced plans to commemorate Sir Andy Murray's illustrious tennis career with a statue at Wimbledon, set to be unveiled by 2027. This tribute will mark the 150th anniversary of the club's first championship in 1877.
A Legacy of Excellence
Andy Murray, a three-time Grand Slam winner, ended Britain's 77-year wait for a men's singles champion at Wimbledon with his memorable victory over Novak Djokovic in 2013. He triumphed again in 2016, defeating Milos Raonic. His contributions have been pivotal in elevating British tennis on the global stage.
The Statue Project
Debbie Jevans, chair of the All England Club, revealed that discussions are underway with Murray and his team to finalize the statue's design and placement. "We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here [at Wimbledon] and we're working closely with him and his team," Jevans stated. The statue will be a lasting tribute to Murray's impact on the sport and the club.
Historical Context
This initiative follows the tradition of honoring tennis legends at Wimbledon. A bronze statue of Fred Perry, the last British men's champion before Murray, was erected in 1984 to mark the 50th anniversary of his first singles championship. Murray's statue will similarly immortalize his "special" moments in the club's history.
Murray's Retirement
Murray retired from professional tennis in August 2024 after an appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris. The All England Club is keen to integrate him into the club's long-term legacy. "Now he's retired, we're very much looking at how we can embrace him, for him to be a part of the club in the long term," Jevans added.
Inspiration from Peers
The club drew inspiration from other tennis venues, such as Roland Garros, which honored Rafael Nadal with a plaque. This move underscores the importance of recognizing the contributions of tennis greats in preserving the sport's rich history.
