Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet Shatter World Records at Eugene Diamond League

Kenyan athletes Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet set new world records in the 1500m and 5000m at the Eugene Diamond League, showcasing their dominance in athletics.

Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet of Kenya made history at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, by breaking world records in their respective events. Kipyegon, a three-time Olympic champion, blazed through the women's 1500m with a time of 3:48.68, surpassing her previous world record by 0.36 seconds. This remarkable achievement came just a week after her attempt to become the first woman to run a sub-four-minute mile fell short.

Meanwhile, Beatrice Chebet set a new women's 5000m world record with a time of 13:58.06, eclipsing the previous record set by Ethiopia's Gudaf Tsegay by over two seconds. Chebet, who already holds Olympic titles in both the 5000m and 10,000m, expressed her joy, stating, "When I was coming here to Eugene, I was coming to prepare to run a world record. I'm so happy."

The event, also known as the Prefontaine Classic, featured 17 individual champions from the Paris Olympics and 14 world-record holders, making it a star-studded affair. Among the highlights was Matt Hudson-Smith of Great Britain, who posted a season's best of 44.10 to win the men's 400m. Zharnel Hughes, another British athlete, ran a season's best of 9.91 in the men's 100m, finishing second behind Jamaica's Kishane Thompson.

In other events, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the United States equalled her season's best of 49.43 to win the women's 400m, while Armand Duplantis of Sweden comfortably won the men's pole vault with a height of 6.00m.

The Diamond League will next move to Monaco before heading to the UK for the London Athletics Meet on 19 July. The finals are scheduled for Zurich on 27 and 28 August, just ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

This event not only highlighted the incredible talent of Kipyegon and Chebet but also set the stage for an exciting season of athletics.
