Dakota Ditcheva: A Champion's Celebration and Vision for MMA

After her historic title win, Dakota Ditcheva shares her celebration and future ambitions for MMA in the UK.

Dakota Ditcheva's recent victory over Taila Santos marked a significant milestone in her career, making her the first British woman to capture a major MMA world championship. Winning the PFL flyweight belt not only earned her immense recognition, but also a whopping $1 million prize. This achievement was worth celebrating in style, and for Ditcheva, that meant ordering McDonald's for her friends and family.

As she recalls, the way things turned out was both amusing and heartwarming. "I actually ended up giving the chicken nuggets to my little brother because he forgot to put an order in. So I ended up with just chips and a Coke, but it was still nice, anyway," Ditcheva laughs. The joy of her knockout victory quickly spread across social media, drawing congratulations from MMA legends like Amanda Nunes, Cris Cyborg, and Kayla Harrison. However, the message that resonated most with her came from a more unexpected source: Paul Dickov, a former Manchester City striker. "It's surreal! We've always been City fans," she expressed, highlighting the blend of sportsmanship across MMA and football.

After the victory celebrations, which included family time exploring Riyadh and a trip to Disneyland in Florida with friends, Ditcheva expressed her desire to keep life normal despite her newfound fame. "Just because I've won a world title doesn’t make me any better than anyone else. Take that million off me, and I'm going to be the same person," she states, emphasizing her commitment to humility.

Balancing her life between Manchester and Florida, where she trains at the renowned American Top Team, Ditcheva credits her mother, a former kickboxing world champion, as a pivotal influence on her career. Handing her the championship belt was an emotional moment for both: "That's probably one thing that I haven't got my head around yet - my mum handed me the belt, from one world champ to another, from a mother to a daughter."

Under the guidance of her coach, Conan Silveira, Ditcheva has honed her skills, with a particular focus on the mental aspect of the sport. Leading up to the fight, she created a mood board filled with visualizations of victory. "Having moved away from my mum, finding that mental support in Conan has been crucial for my confidence."

Despite her individual success, Ditcheva acknowledges the growing need for greater MMA promotion in the UK. She is determined to carry her triumph forward by advocating for more events to be held in her home country. "One of my priorities for 2025 is to bring the PFL to Manchester. We need to build the fanbase here, which isn't happening as effectively as it could."

In hopes of inspiring the next generation of female fighters, Ditcheva shares her journey through the male-dominated sport. "It's intimidating to train in a gym full of guys, but it's incredibly beneficial. Enjoy your training and embrace every opportunity you get to learn!"

As Dakota Ditcheva looks toward the future, she remains focused on her roots and the community that shaped her, eager to pave the way for aspiring martial artists across the nation.

For young girls in MMA, Ditcheva’s message is clear: don’t shy away from challenges, embrace them. Training alongside guys, while daunting, can greatly enhance your skills. "Remember, you're going to improve when you enjoy what you're doing!"
