Celebrating the Legacy of Racehorse Owner John Hales

John Hales, a prominent figure in horse racing, has passed, leaving behind a rich legacy of triumphs and cherished memories.

John Hales, a distinguished name in the world of horse racing, sadly passed away at the age of 85. He was best known for owning legendary racehorses and his immense contributions to the sport.

In the 1980s, Hales co-founded Golden Bear Toys, which catapulted him into the spotlight, creating enchanting toys from beloved children's television programs like Teletubbies and Thomas the Tank Engine. However, his true passion lay in horse racing. Hales became a Midwest powerhouse, best recognized for his success with the renowned grey racehorse One Man, trained by the celebrated Gordon Richards. One Man's remarkable achievements included twice clinching the prestigious King George VI Chase in 1995 and 1996, earning a place in the hearts of racing enthusiasts.

Hales's legacy continued with the Grand National winner Neptune Collonges, trained by Paul Nicholls, who triumphed in 2012, further solidifying Hales's reputation in racing lore. Despite not winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, One Man secured victory in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, a race he captured twice, with Azertyuiop in 2004 and Politologue in 2020, making Hales a celebrated figure in the racing community.

In recent years, Hales enjoyed shared ownership with iconic figures, including Sir Alex Ferguson. Their partnership brought forth excellent performances, including a notable 740,000 euro purchase of Caldwell Potter, a promising contender under Nicholls's guidance. Just days before his passing, Hales joyfully witnessed his last victory when jockey Harry Skelton led Protektorat to a triumphant 22-length win at the Fleur De Lys Chase in Windsor.

The racing world mourns the loss of John Hales, as he is remembered not just for his achievements, but for his generosity, camaraderie, and the indelible mark he left on the sport of horse racing.

"It is with great sadness to report that John Hales passed away last evening. A great man and a fantastic owner and friend for many people. He will be missed by so many in racing. RIP John," remarked trainer Paul Nicholls in a heartfelt tribute.

John Hales's journey in horse racing will always resonate within the community, reminding us of the thrilling moments and unforgettable stories he gifted to the sport.
