Lottery Winners Fuel Durham Women FC's Ascent to the Women's Super League

Multi-millionaire lottery winners Patrick and Frances Connolly invest in Durham Women FC, aiming to inspire future female athletes and promote the club to the Women's Super League.

Transformative Investment in Women's Football

Patrick and Frances Connolly, the Hartlepool couple who struck it rich with a £115m EuroMillions win in 2019, have made a significant investment in Durham Women FC. They have acquired a 25% stake in the Championship side, following a recent change in ownership from Durham University to new directors Lee Sanders and Dawn Hepple.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The Connollys have been long-time supporters of the club, partly influenced by their daughters' past involvement in local women's football. "We are excited to have a bigger role in helping Durham Women FC reach new heights, with a target to deliver a sustainable future and inspire the next generation of female athletes," they stated.

Club's Vision and Future Plans

Mr. Sanders, the club's founder and former first team manager, highlighted the significance of this investment: "It takes us to the next level." The funds are expected to be transformative, aiding the club's ambition to build a bespoke stadium and potentially secure promotion to the Women's Super League.

Current Standings and Challenges

Durham Women FC is currently positioned fourth in the Women's Championship, with only one team set to advance to the top tier at the season's end. The investment comes at a crucial time as the club aims to consolidate its position and push for promotion.

A Standalone Club in Women's Football

Interestingly, Durham Women FC is one of the few independent women's football clubs in England, not affiliated with any men's team. This unique standing adds to the club's identity and challenges, making the Connollys' investment all the more pivotal.
