Zebre Stuns Edinburgh in Thrilling URC Clash, Crushing Hosts' Playoff Dreams

In a dramatic United Rugby Championship match, Zebre delivered a historic upset against Edinburgh, severely denting the hosts' playoff aspirations while securing a remarkable away victory.

In a jaw-dropping encounter at Edinburgh’s home ground, Zebre pulled off a stunning 22-17 victory, marking their first win at the venue since 2016. This result has dealt a significant blow to Edinburgh’s playoff hopes in the United Rugby Championship (URC).

Zebre, who are currently second from the bottom in the standings, showed remarkable resilience and determination throughout the match. Their historic upset began early when Jacopo Trulla sprinted down the left wing to score the opening try in just the sixth minute, courtesy of a brilliant pass from Geronimo Prisciantelli.

Edinburgh managed to level the score when Ross McCann powered through the defense, but Zebre quickly regained control. Scrum-half Gonzalo Garcia sneaked over from the base of a ruck to put the visitors back in front. By halftime, Zebre extended their lead with a penalty from Giacomo Da Re, making it a 10-point advantage.

The second half saw Edinburgh’s trademark resurgence, with Mosese Tuipulotu crashing over for his first URC try, reducing the deficit to just three points. However, Zebre responded in style as replacement Tommaso di Bartolomeo finished off a powerful maul to restore their lead.

Despite being reduced to 13 men in the final 10 minutes due to a sin-bin and a red card, Zebre’s defense held firm. Edinburgh managed one final try through Luke Crosbie, but the Italian side’s heroic defensive effort secured their victory.

This win marks Zebre’s second consecutive away triumph following their shock victory over Ulster in January, hinting at a potential resurgence for the team. Meanwhile, Edinburgh must regroup quickly if they are to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Key Stats:

  • Zebre Tries: Trulla, Garcia, Di Bartolomeo
  • Edinburgh Tries: McCann, Tuipulotu, Crosbie
  • Man of the Match: Giacomo Da Re (Zebre)
