Simon Easterby Focused on Ireland Amid Wales Coaching Speculation

Ireland's interim boss Simon Easterby addresses rumors linking him to the Wales head coach role, emphasizing his commitment to Ireland's Six Nations campaign.

Simon Easterby, the interim head coach of the Ireland rugby team, has dismissed speculation about potentially taking over as Wales' new head coach. Despite being rumored as a top target for the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), Easterby confirmed he has had no contact regarding the role.

Easterby, who has led Ireland to victories over England and Scotland in his two matches as interim boss, addressed the rumors ahead of Ireland's Six Nations clash against Wales in Cardiff. "I didn't really know that I had been linked, but of course, there's been speculation, and that's all it is: speculation," he said.

Easterby's Commitment to Ireland

Easterby emphasized his dedication to his current role, stating, "I love what I do here. I've been in this position with the team for a long time, and I'm very fortunate with the people I get to work with, both management and players. For me, that's a dream job."

The Yorkshire-born 49-year-old has a strong connection to Welsh rugby, having captained and coached the Scarlets before joining Ireland's coaching staff in 2014. However, he remains focused on Ireland's campaign under the current circumstances. "Right now, this is my only focus," he added.

Future Uncertainty in Rugby Coaching

Easterby also reflected on the fluid nature of coaching roles in rugby. "Whatever happens in the future... in a year's time, you could lose your job. We know in sport, it's fairly fluid around people moving from thing to thing," he said.

With Warren Gatland’s departure from Wales last week, the WRU is in search of a new head coach. Matt Sherratt has taken interim charge, but the search for a permanent replacement is ongoing. Easterby, however, remains committed to Ireland's immediate goals. "Whatever's gone on, I've had no contact from the WRU. So for me, it's all guns blazing towards Cardiff on Saturday," he concluded.

Easterby's Coaching Journey

Easterby began his coaching career at Scarlets before transitioning to Ireland's backroom team. He has stepped up as Ireland's interim head coach this year while Andy Farrell is on secondment with the British and Irish Lions. His leadership has already yielded impressive results, but his future beyond the Six Nations remains uncertain.

As speculation swirls, Easterby remains steadfast in his commitment to Ireland, ensuring the team is fully prepared for their upcoming Six Nations encounter in Cardiff.
