Carla Ward Commends Republic of Ireland's 'First-Class' Attitude Ahead of UEFA Nations League Opener

Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward praises the squad's mental attitude ahead of their UEFA Nations League opener against Turkey.

Republic of Ireland manager Carla Ward has lauded the mental attitude of her squad as they prepare for their UEFA Nations League opener against Turkey on Friday night. Ward, who took over last month after Eileen Gleeson's departure, expressed her confidence in the team's readiness and spirit.

"They've been top-drawer," Ward said during a press conference. "The application and attitude from every single player this week has been first-class. I couldn't ask for more."

Liverpool forward Leanne Kiernan will miss the match due to a calf injury, but Ward hinted at her possible return for the away game against Slovenia on Tuesday. Ward has brought in former Republic of Ireland men's international Alan Mahon as her assistant, and together they have outlined a clear footballing philosophy.

"We’ve been very clear in what we want from everybody," Ward explained. "Me and Alan, we like energy, we like personality. We want to see that in our players and give them the freedom to express themselves. I think you’ll see that on the pitch."

Katie McCabe, who will captain the Republic of Ireland for the 65th time, reflected on the surprise departures of Gleeson and assistant coach Colin Healy after the Euro 2025 play-offs. McCabe expressed gratitude for their contributions but emphasized the need to focus on the future.

"We’ve had some amazing moments, but unfortunately, we didn’t qualify for the Euros," McCabe said. "Now, it’s time to look forward. Our goal is to qualify for the World Cup in 2027, and that journey starts tomorrow night with our new manager."

The match will take place at Tallaght Stadium in Dublin, with the Republic of Ireland ranked 25th in the world, 35 places above Turkey. Fans are eager to see how Ward’s leadership will shape the team’s performance in this crucial opener.
