Scotland Bolsters Squad with George Hirst for Crucial Nations League Clash

Scotland adds striker George Hirst to their squad for the Nations League play-offs against Greece, aiming to strengthen their attack.

Scotland has called up George Hirst for the Nations League play-offs against Greece, marking his first inclusion in the national team. The 26-year-old Ipswich Town forward, who previously represented England at the youth level, has been cleared to play for Scotland through his grandfather's heritage. Hirst's addition comes after a delay in paperwork initially kept him out of the squad announced earlier this week.

Hirst has been in solid form this season, scoring four goals for Ipswich, including a late consolation in their recent 4-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest. His inclusion adds depth to Scotland's attacking options, joining the likes of Che Adams, Tommy Conway, Kevin Nisbet, and James Wilson.

Steve Clarke, Scotland's head coach, expressed his confidence in Hirst's abilities, stating, "George is somebody that we've had in mind for a few months. I've watched him recently, and he's a player that would help to give us more depth to that position."

Scotland is determined to maintain their position in League A of the Nations League. The first leg of the play-off will take place in Greece on Thursday, 20 March, with the return leg scheduled for Hampden Park on Sunday, 24 March. Both matches will be broadcast live on the BBC.

Who is George Hirst?

Hirst, a former England Under-20 international, brings a unique skill set to the Scottish squad. Standing at 6ft 3in, he is known for his physicality, mobility, and intelligence on the pitch. Despite facing significant injury setbacks this season, including a knee injury that sidelined him for nearly two months, Hirst has shown resilience and commitment.

Aaron Paul, BBC 5 Live presenter, highlighted Hirst's potential, saying, "He offers something different to what Scotland already have. He's a big unit, and he'll use his size. He's not a raw goalscorer, but he's someone who will press well and contribute to the team's overall play."

Hirst's football pedigree is notable, being the son of David Hirst, a legendary striker for Sheffield Wednesday. His inclusion in the squad is seen as a strategic move by Clarke to bolster Scotland's chances in the upcoming crucial fixtures.

What’s Next for Scotland?

With the Nations League play-offs on the horizon, Scotland's focus is on securing their place in League A. The addition of Hirst could prove pivotal in their quest for success. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how he integrates into the team and contributes to their campaign.
