Football Coaching as a Lifeline for Female Prisoners in Africa After spending years in prison, football has given Marie in Freetown a chance for a fresh start. The Confederation of African Football (Caf) organized the first-ever coaching course for female inmates. 26 women and five police officers participated. The course equips them with a Caf-accredited D licence for grassroots coaching. Inmates in Ghana and Liberia have also benefited. Isha Johansen pioneered the project, seeing the need for change. Some inmates sew jerseys and training bibs. Former Ghana international Mercy Tagoe stresses its impact on helping inmates back into society. Johansen is working to expand the scheme globally.
