Henry Pollock Shines in Champions Cup: A Rising Star in Rugby Union

Discover how Northampton's Henry Pollock has emerged as a key player in the Champions Cup, earning a nomination for Player of the Year.

Henry Pollock's Breakout Season

Northampton flanker Henry Pollock has had a remarkable season, earning a nomination for the Champions Cup Player of the Year. The 20-year-old has scored six tries in six games, helping Saints reach their second consecutive semi-final. Pollock's performance has been pivotal, especially in the quarter-final win over Castres where he scored two tries.

Competition Heats Up

Pollock faces stiff competition from other rugby giants. Leinster and New Zealand centre Jordie Barrett, along with Toulouse's English back row Jack Willis, are also on the eight-strong shortlist. Ireland and Leinster pair Caelan Doris and Jamison Gibson-Park are nominated, alongside Willis' club team-mate Thomas Ramos and Bordeaux-Begles pair Maxime Lucu and Damian Penaud.

Key Matches Ahead

Northampton is set to face Leinster in Dublin on Saturday, 3 May, while holders Toulouse will take on Bordeaux Begles in an all-French clash the following day. These matches are crucial for Pollock and his team as they aim to secure their spot in the finals.

Pollock's Rapid Rise

Pollock's journey to the top has been swift. Before this season, he had made only one Premiership appearance, spending much of last season on loan at Championship side Bedford. The departure of back rows Courtney Lawes and Lewis Ludlam has accelerated his progress. After winning the under-20 World Cup with England last summer, Pollock has become a key player in the first team.

Future Prospects

Pollock scored two tries off the bench on his Test debut against Wales at the end of England's Six Nations campaign. His performance has sparked discussions about a possible selection for the British and Irish Lions squad in May.

Lyon to Host 2027 European Finals

In other news, Lyon has been selected as the host for the 2027 Champions Cup and Challenge Cup finals. The 59,186-capacity OL Stadium, home to the French city's football team, won out over six rival bids. Lyon previously staged the 2016 Champions Cup final and hosted several matches during the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Upcoming Finals

This year's European finals will take place at Cardiff's Principality Stadium on the weekend of 23 and 24 May, while the 2026 showpieces will be played in Bilbao at the San Mames Stadium.
