London Marathon 2025: A Historic Milestone in Athletics
The 2025 London Marathon set a new world record for the most finishers, marking a historic milestone in athletics.

The 2025 London Marathon has etched its name in the annals of athletics history by setting a new world record for the number of finishers. Despite the challenging hot conditions during its 45th edition, the event saw an unprecedented number of participants crossing the finish line.
At 18:35 BST on Sunday, the number of runners who completed the 26.2-mile route surpassed the previous record of 55,646, set by the New York Marathon in November. This tally is expected to grow further as more runners finish on The Mall.
Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, expressed his elation: "The TCS London Marathon is the world's greatest marathon, and it is now officially the world's biggest marathon. The support from the hundreds of thousands lining the streets has been unprecedented and is so important to those participants running for so many good causes."
The event's impact extends beyond the race itself. Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa surged to victory in the elite women's race, setting a world record for a women's only field, while Kenya's Sebastian Sawe triumphed in the men's event. In the wheelchair races, Catherine Debrunner broke her own course record in the women's race, and Marcel Hug secured his seventh victory in the men's event.
On Saturday, more than 15,000 young people competed in the Mini London Marathon, making it the largest since its inception in 1986.
The TCS London Marathon continues to inspire and transform lives, with over 840,000 people applying for the ballot to enter this year's race, breaking the previous world record of 578,304 for the 2024 edition. The event's inclusivity was also evident, with 49% of UK applicants being female and a 105% increase in applications from people aged between 20-29.
If you've been inspired by this year's marathon, now is the time to enter the ballot for the 2026 TCS London Marathon and be part of this extraordinary experience.
