Martin Paterson Takes Helm at Notts County: A New Era Begins in League Two Football

Notts County appoints Martin Paterson as head coach, aiming to revitalize their League Two campaign with dynamic and progressive football strategies.

Notts County has officially named Martin Paterson, the former Burton Albion boss, as their new head coach. This decision comes after a month-long search following the dismissal of Stuart Maynard after their play-off semi-final loss to AFC Wimbledon.

Paterson, a 38-year-old former Northern Ireland international forward, had a short but impactful tenure at Burton Albion during the latter half of the 2023-24 season. His leadership was crucial in helping the team narrowly escape relegation from League One.

Roberto Gagliardi, Notts County's director of football, expressed his enthusiasm about Paterson's appointment. "In our conversations with him, it's been clear that he shares our vision of playing dynamic, progressive football. We believe he can bring more intensity and directness to our play," Gagliardi stated on the club's official website.

Paterson's coaching philosophy emphasizes hard work, organization, and making his teams tough to beat. These traits were pivotal during his time at Burton Albion, where he took over under challenging circumstances and managed to steer the team clear of relegation.

Despite winning only five out of 20 games during his tenure at Burton Albion, Paterson's efforts were enough to secure a 20th-place finish, just above the relegation zone. Ben Robinson, the former owner and chairman of Burton Albion, acknowledged the difficult conditions under which Paterson took charge.

Paterson's coaching career includes roles as an assistant head coach at various EFL clubs and a stint alongside Phil Neville in Miami. His appointment at Notts County is seen as a strategic move to harness his potential and drive the club towards success.

The Reedtz brothers, owners of Notts County, praised Paterson's passion, determination, and ambition during the negotiations. They believe his winning mentality will be a significant asset to the team.

Andy Edwards will serve as Paterson's assistant head coach, while Sam Slocombe has extended his stay at Meadow Lane by taking on the role of first-team coach. This new coaching setup aims to bring a fresh perspective and renewed energy to Notts County's campaign in League Two.
