Gareth Taylor Emerges as Top Contender for Liverpool Women's Super League Managerial Role
Former Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor is the frontrunner to become Liverpool's new manager in the Women's Super League, aiming to revitalize the team's performance.

Former Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor is currently the leading candidate to take over as the new manager for Liverpool in the Women's Super League (WSL). Liverpool has been without a manager since dismissing Matt Beard in February and has been actively searching for a suitable replacement.
Taylor, who is 52 years old, assumed the role at Manchester City in May 2020. During his tenure, he guided the team to two major honors but narrowly missed out on the WSL title in 2024, finishing behind Chelsea on goal difference. His tenure at City ended abruptly just five days before the Women's League Cup final in March this year, with the team trailing Chelsea by 12 points in the WSL.
Throughout his four full seasons at City, Taylor ensured that the team consistently finished within the top four of the WSL. However, his time at the club was marked by controversy, with several players publicly discussing their experiences under his management. England goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck described her relationship with Taylor as "fractured," and Chloe Kelly's tumultuous loan exit in January further fueled the speculation.
Liverpool, a two-time WSL champion, concluded the 2024-25 season in seventh place. The club is now focused on achieving greater consistency as they strive to climb the league table and regularly compete with England's top teams. Since Beard's departure, former assistant Amber Whiteley has been serving as the interim manager and expressed her desire to take on the role permanently.
Nonetheless, Taylor has emerged as the leading candidate, and Liverpool is currently in discussions with him to finalize personal terms. Stay updated with the latest WSL news on our dedicated page.
